Milky Beauty Tamannaah Bhatia’s supernatural thriller Odela 2, the sequel to the 2022 OTT release Odela, hit the big screens today amidst decent buzz. Directed by Ashok Teja and penned by Sampath Nandi, the film carries moderate expectations. How does it fare? Let’s find out in our review.
Story:
In the village of Odela, the corpse of Tirupathi (Vasishta), a man who committed a series of brutal rapes and murders, is sealed by the villagers in an attempt to end his reign of terror. But his vengeful spirit returns six months later, determined to destroy the entire village. As women once again begin falling victim to horrific murders, fear grips the community. Desperate, the villagers seek help from Bhairavi (Tamannaah Bhatia), a powerful Shiva Shakti. She arrives with a divine purpose: to confront Tirupathi’s spirit and restore peace. Why was Tirupathi really killed? What is Bhairavi’s connection to Odela? And how does this final battle between good and evil unfold? These form the crux of the narrative.
Plus Points:
Vasishta fits the role of Tirupathi well. His intense screen presence and confrontations with Tamannaah in the second half are among the film’s better moments.
Tamannaah, as Bhairavi, does a passable job in a role that demands gravitas. Although her character enters just before the interval, she dominates much of the second half. Some of her scenes—especially in the climax—land well, but the emotional and devotional layers of her character feel underexplored.
A few sequences, particularly the murder scenes and the climax featuring Lord Shiva, are effectively staged and provide brief moments of impact in an otherwise uneven film.
Minus Points:
The film suffers from its wafer-thin storyline and predictability. While the idea of good vs evil is a time-tested trope in Telugu cinema, the execution here lacks both emotional depth and novelty.
Director Ashok Teja tries hard to bring Sampath Nandi’s script to life with the kind of intensity or engagement it needs. The pacing falters, and the screenplay fails to build any real suspense or tension.
Tamannaah, though sincere in her efforts, feels miscast in some portions. The devotional and dramatic aspects of her character could have been handled with more nuance.
The film also suffers from a lack of engaging scenes and uninspired song placements that drag the already slow-paced narrative further down. Characters like Murali Sharma could have been better developed.
Technical Aspects:
Writer Sampath Nandi presents an okay script, but director Ashok Teja could have executed it better. Ajaneesh Loknath’s music provides some background atmosphere, but lacks the punch in crucial moments.
Soundararajan’s cinematography is functional, while Avinash’s editing could have been tighter—many scenes overstay their welcome. The film feels overly long for the story it tells. The VFX work is underwhelming, and though the production values are adequate, they don’t stand out.
Verdict:
On the whole, Odela 2 is a supernatural thriller with a few scattered moments of interest but largely suffers due to a predictable storyline, underdeveloped characters, and flat execution. Tamannaah is decent, and Vasishta delivers a committed performance, but the film never truly grips. While it may be a marginal improvement over Odela Railway Station, it falls short of delivering a memorable cinematic experience. Enter with modest expectations.
