IMD warns of thunderstorms and gusty winds

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is likely to see generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) over the next 24–48 hours the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted.

Light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers will perceive at isolated locations across Telangana until April 24, with thunderstorm warnings issued for several districts from April 18.

The extended wet spell is expected to be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in some areas, prompting the agency to issue yellow-level weather alerts.

The weather advisory follows reports of a hailstorm in Medak district, which IMD officials confirmed as a result of an active low-level trough influencing the region’s weather dynamics.

Weather System Behind the Change

“A trough line has developed from North Madhya Maharashtra to the Gulf of Mannar, running through Marathwada, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu at approximately 0.9 km above mean sea level,” said K.S. Sridhar, IMD meteorologist, speaking to Newsmeter.

“This system is drawing moisture from the southern Bay of Bengal and intensifying local instability, which is typical for pre-monsoon activity in April,” he explained.

He added that southerly and south-westerly low-level winds are currently dominating the region, further supporting convective cloud formation and isolated rainfall events.

Daily Forecast and Rainfall Outlook

According to IMD’s 7-day forecast bulletin:

From April 18 to April 24, Telangana is expected to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated locations.

Maximum temperatures are likely to rise by 2–3°C over the next three days, despite intermittent rain.

Yellow warnings have been issued for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) in several districts from April 18 to April 20.

Beyond April 20, no major weather warnings have been issued, although the isolated rain forecast remains in place.

Districts Under Weather Alert

The IMD has flagged 20+ districts across Telangana for possible thunderstorm activity in the next 72 hours, including Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medak, Nalgonda, Warangal, Mahabubnagar, and Jogulamba Gadwal.

Public Advisory

The IMD urges the public to monitor local updates and remain cautious during thunderstorms. While the rainfall is beneficial in reducing temperatures and supporting early crop growth, sudden gusty winds and lightning can pose risks.

For daily updates, citizens can refer to the official IMD Hyderabad portal or follow alerts issued by local administration channels.
