Nizamabad: Tension prevailed at the Government Degree College grounds after a few stalls and welcome arches set up as part of the Rythu Mahotsavam programme were damaged when a helicopter carrying Ministers landed at the venue.
The three day Rythu Mahotsavam programme was scheduled to be inaugurated on Monday. Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy flew to the venue from Hyderabad in a helicopter.
Accordingly, the local officials arranged a helipad close to the venue. However, the helicopter landed in the college grounds, stirring up dust and with its impact damaging a few stalls of the nearly 150 stalls at the venue apart from the welcome arches set up at the ground. Sensing trouble, people and officials ran for safety, according to reports.
A few police personnel deployed at the ground sustained minor injuries. However, officials claimed there were no untoward incidents and the Ministers were also safe.
It may be recalled that Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy had a close shave last week, when he arrived in Nagar Kurnool in a helicopter to participate in the Bhu Bharathi portal programme. As the helicopter was about to land, fire erupted in the dry grass near the helipad. Fire and police personnel immediately doused the flames. The helicopter landed safely.
