"This Franchise Cannot Afford To Lose A Guy Like Quinn Hughes": Rutherford & Allvin The Importance Of Keeping Quinn Hughes With The Vancouver Canucks

On Monday, President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford and General Manager Patrik Allvin met with the media to discuss the problematic 2024-25 season. At the end of the availability, Rutherford and Allvin were asked about Quinn Hughes and his future with the Vancouver Canucks. While Hughes is still signed for two more seasons, speculation has already started to grow that he may head elsewhere once he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Based on Rutherford and Allvin’s answers, it is clear that the organization is doing everything they can to keep Hughes as a member of the Canucks. Based on his performance over the past few seasons, Vancouver’s captain will be getting a significant raise, which, according to Rutherford, will not be a problem. Rutherford also proposed potentially bringing Jack and Luke Hughes to the Canucks, which could land him in some hot water with the NHL.

"The one thing that we will be sure of is that we will have enough cap space to offer him the kind of contract that he deserves," said Rutherford. "That’s the one thing we can prepare for. And it may not boil down to money with him. You know, he’s said before, he wants to play with his brothers, and that would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here. So there’s many moving parts here. Agree 100% that this franchise cannot afford to lose a guy like Quinn Hughes, and we will do everything we can to keep him here. But the end of the day, it’ll be his decision. We got to be careful with tampering, so we’ll just leave it at that. I probably crossed the line anyways."

Proposing that the team could acquire two players from the New Jersey Devils could be a costly mistake for Rutherford and the organization. Back in 2016, General Manager Jim Benning was fined $50,000 for mentioning that the organization was interested in both P.K. Subban and Steven Stamkos. If history repeats itself, it could mean another fine coming to Vancouver.

Allvin also spoke on Hughes’s importance to the organization. This year was challenging for many reasons, but Hughes was able to step up and lead by example both on and off the ice. Just like Canucks fans, Allvin is expecting another strong season from the captain as they look to secure a spot for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"I’ve seen tremendous growth in Quinn during the three years here, said Allvin. "What he went through this year, as a captain, leaders, several meetings with Rick Tocchet. I got a lot of respect for him, off ice, more so than on ice. And I’m sure that he’s eager to get started here and come back and be hungry to play another year for the Vancouver Canucks."

While Hughes is signed for two more seasons, there is some anxiety growing among the fan base. Not only is Hughes the best defenceman ever to play for this organization, but he is slowly entering the conversation for the greatest players to ever play for Vancouver. Overall, the 2025-26 season is going to be massive for the Canucks as they can start working on an extension during the 2026 off-season.
