Amid the ongoing road expansion works in Gachibowlithe popular DLF food street, long a part of Hyderabad’s nightlife, is set to be cleared, senior police officials aware about the development confirmed.
A hotspot for employees working in the IT and business corridor of the metropolis, the bustling one-kilometre stretch with over 200-odd stalls serving a wide variety of food options will not be operational in about a month’s time.
Authorities said that the move is aimed at addressing persistent traffic congestion in the area, particularly during peak hours. “The food carts and parked vehicles during the evening hours occupy a significant part of the road, leading to wait times of 2-3 minutes for commuters,” a Gachibowli traffic police official said. “Due to this, only 60% of the commuters use this road in the evenings, while the rest travel via the IIIT junction towards Miyapur.”
The ripple effect can be seen at IIIT junction where commuters face an average wait time of about 60-65 seconds, which touches three minutes during peak periods.
The official noted that traffic volumes on the DLF stretch are highest between 8.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m., and again between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., with significant movement from and to areas like Lingampally, Nallagandla, and Chandanagar. While IT employees travel towards the Wipro Circle and others also take this road to get to Miyapur.
As part of the relocation plan, the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) is preparing to shift the food vendors to a ground at the end of the ITC Kohenur Road, where several food stalls are already in operation. “We are working on a structured relocation plan, which should be ready in about 2-3 weeks. The focus is on the street vendors,” a senior official confirmed.
As part of the plan, the vendors will likely be given designated spaces with monthly rents and IDs.
Shop owners and vendors said that they have been informed about the upcoming closure and the transition process. “Authorities said that the road expansion will span over a month or two, and we have been asked to wrap up operations within this period,” said a juice shop owner at the food street. “We might be moving somewhere in Hitec City, still contemplating,” the individual said.
“Abhi toh time hai (There is still time),” said an instant noodles stall owner. “I am not sure about what will happen next, but we have been told to start preparing,” the individual said.
A few vendors have already begun the relocation process, with a fast-food shop owner confirming plans to resume operations in Madhapur “We are shifting the same shop to Madhapur, onto land belonging to the same owner. Everything is ready there, and we plan to move next week,” the owner said.
The clearing of the DLF food street marks a significant change for Gachibowli’s evening landscape, as authorities push ahead with infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the area’s growing traffic demands.
