Hyderabad: Scammers on the prowl on matrimonial sites

Hyderabad: The frauds perpetrated by cyber criminals targeting women looking out for their life partners on matrimonial sites have been on the rise. Some recent incidents have shown how foolproof measures promised on these websites have turned out to be false with fraudsters exploiting them to target their victims.

Cyber fraudsters are creating fake profiles on popular matrimonial platforms, posing as potential partners to build emotional connections with unsuspecting users. Once trust is established with the targets, particularly women, they fabricate emergency situations or claim financial distress.

Thus, they are tricking victims into transferring large sums of money and cheating them. They often resort to blackmailing and threatening the victims too.

Cybercrime officials say the fraudsters often pose as well-educated professionals of various fields working abroad to gain credibility.

“These cyber crooks are good with their tactics and are highly convincing. They are experienced in exploiting the emotional vulnerability of people genuinely seeking life partners,” said a cybercrime official. Authorities requested users of matrimony sites to remain cautious, avoid sharing personal or financial information, and report any suspicious behaviour.

Meanwhile, matrimonial platforms have also been asked to strengthen verification processes and improve user awareness to curb such incidents.

Cyber experts recommend conducting background checks and avoiding quick financial commitments to prevent falling prey to such deceptive tactics. Warnings have been issued about booking cases for security lapses in the verification system.
