Karimnagar: In a significant breakthrough, the epigraphy branch of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) successfully copied 11 ancient rock inscriptions dating from the 1st century BCE to the 6th century CE.
The ASI team, led by E. Munirathnam Reddy, director (epigraphy), conducted the epigraphical survey deep inside the Gundaram Reserve Forest in Peddapalli district on Tuesday.
Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, Munirathnam Reddy expressed enthusiasm about the finds, stating, “This is one of the rare instances where inscriptions of such antiquity have been found within a reserve forest. The challenging terrain only underscores the importance of the work.”
These inscriptions could shed light on early settlement patterns, regional governance and religious practices of the period, he added. The ASI plans to carry out further documentation, preservation and potential conservation efforts in collaboration with local authorities.
