Bengaluru: The officials of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) registered a complaint with the Cyber Crime police station, Bengaluru over an attempted attack on its water connection portal to access customers data. However, BWSSB’s technical team alerted by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) acted in a quick time and were able to contain the breach attempt on its portal.

The attempted attack on BWSSB’s online water connection portal took place on April 11. In a statement here on Wednesday, BWSSB Chairman Dr Ram Prasath Manohar stated “Initial investigations confirmed a small portion of data was accessed by hackers. However, no sensitive or confidential customer information was leaked in the attempted attack on its portal.”

Meanwhile, a detailed investigation is underway and stringent action will be initiated against those involved in the attempted data theft.

As a precautionary step, the Chairman said, all relevant data from the affected portal has been transferred to more secure centralized servers. In addition to it, BWSSB is actively evaluating the implementation of blockchain technology to enhance digital security.”

Ram Manohar said blockchain is considered as a long-term solution to fortify the Board’s digital infrastructure and assured BWSS’s continuous upgrading of its digital systems to ensure safe and efficient delivery of public services.
