GHMC To Reintroduce Digital LED Ads After 5 Years

Hyderabad:The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has proposed to reintroduce digital LED advertisements, according to an amendment proposed in the civic body’s advertisement policy.

All types of LED advertisements were banned in 2020 as it was feared that moving images on the road will distract motorists and its reintroduction is likely to trigger a new controversy.

According to the GHMC, many commercial establishments have requested permission for setting up LED digital advertisements in their premises. Some of them already have installed LED digital boards, but the corporation is unable to collect the charges.

Earlier, the GHMC had decided to allow the use of advertisements with flashing lights or non-static illumination only after a clearance from the High Court and traffic police.

On March 15, 2024, however, the state government approved digital static LED display with ad-rotation time of 10 seconds on the Foot Over Bridges (FoBs) at L.V. Prasad Eye Institute and another educational institution in the same area by relaxing the GO on an experimental basis.

Following this, a new advertisement policy was submitted to the GHMC Standing Committee on Wednesday seeking its approval. For LED digital static shop boards with a rotation of 10 seconds, the price ranges from `5,000 to `5,500 per square metre per year.

The maximum permitted size is 15 per cent of the frontage of that particular establishment. If any violations/ deviations is observed from the permission accorded, a penalty, which will be 10 times of advertising fee, will be levied.
