Six persons, including five MBBS students, were killed when a car in which the students were travelling went out of control in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district on Wednesday, April 30.
The accident happened near Pothireddypalem in Kovur mandal, when the car in which six medical students were travelling crashed into a roadside house. A resident of the house, Venkata Ramanaiah (50), died on the spot.
Six medical students travelling in the car were critically injured. They were shifted to a private hospital in Nellore, where five of them succumbed.
The deceased were all second-year MBBS students from Narayana Medical College in Nellore. They were identified as Jeevan Chandra Reddy, Naresh Naik, Abhishek Raj, Abhisai Purshottam and Yagnesh. Another student, Navneet Shankar, is undergoing treatment and his condition is reported to be stable.
The students were returning to Nellore after attending an engagement ceremony in Buchhireddypalem.
Police reportedly said the car was speeding when the driver lost control while crossing the petrol bunk near Pothireddypalem and rammed the vehicle into the roadside house.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the accident. He conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that the government would extend support to them.
YSRCP President and former CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed deep shock and grief over the accident. He called the loss of young, promising lives “heartbreaking” and urged stringent road safety measures.
