Is Hyderabad under a severe water crisis? (AI-generated image)
Reportedly, a private operator charges around 3,500 to 4,000 for a 25 KL tanker, around 1,500 to 2,000 is the price of a 10 KL water tanker. According to a resident of a gated community in Kondapur, households are now booking four to five private water tankers each week in addition to the supply from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).
He noted that unlike last year, when there was little need for additional water, this year’s supply from the board has become highly erratic, with water available for only three to four hours a day instead of the usual seven to eight. Borewells in the area have also dried up, even those dug as deep as 1,200 metres, whereas earlier, water could be accessed at just 600 metres.
Meanwhile, according to the HMWS&SB, Hyderabad’s water tanker demand has already surpassed 8 lakh bookings in the first four months of 2025, marking a sharp 30 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
