Congress leaders led by BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud met the Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and thanked him for forwarding the Legislation related to enhancement of reservations for Backward Classes to 42% to the President’s Office for the assent.
The delegation consisted of BC MLAs, MLCs, former MLAs, MPs and chairmen of various corporations and they thanked the Governor for taking an expeditious decision on passing on the Bill to the President’s Office when the Central government has announced its decision to include caste census in the general census.
Later, speaking to the media, Mr. Ponnam Prabhakar said the Revanth Reddy government has become a role model for the entire country in ensuring that the BCs get their fair share in political, educational and employment spheres. The caste survey by the Telangana Government showed to the country that such an exercise can be taken up without any hassles.
TPCC president Mahesh Goud termed the BC Castes survey in Telangana historic, and the subsequent decision of the Telangana government to enhance BC reservations to 42% was being welcomed across the country. He credited the victory to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been raising this issue on all platforms ever since he believed that caste census will give more opportunities to the backward classes.
In March, the Telangana Legislative Assembly passed two bills pertaining to the enhancement of reservation to backward classes to 42% in educational institutions, employment, and local body posts.
