Cong MP Mallu Ravi backs caste census, hails Telangana model as national template

Hyderabad: Congress MP Mallu Ravi on Saturday lauded the Congress Working Committee (CWC) resolution for a caste-based census across the country. He said the resolution that the Telangana model should be adopted for conducting the census was a matter of pride for the state.
The Nagarkurnool MP said the Centre’s proposal to take up the census was welcome and pointed out that the caste census in Telangana was done in a scientific manner.

“It is necessary for the govt to have exact data to take up welfare measures for the benefit of various castes,” he said. Ravi said the limit on reservations up to 50% only should be removed and reservations for SC, ST, OBCs, and minorities should be implemented in private organisations as per Article 15 (5).
Meanwhile, TPCC official spokesperson Chanagani Dayakar pointed out that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appreciated the caste census in Telangana and demanded that it should be taken up across the country.
“The centre has finally agreed to it due to the persistent demand. The BJP should be concerned about social justice instead of being only bothered about votes,” he said. Dayakar said there were 3,000 caste groups and 25,000 sub-castes in the entire country. He said the centre should not restrict itself to only making the announcement about undertaking the caste survey but take immediate measures to conduct it.
