An F-1 student is paying a heavy price just for fast-tracking his Master’s course after his bachelor’s.

Taking to social media, the international students shared that they finished a 4+1 program with a semester gap between the two degrees. They applied for OPT (Optional Practical Training) after completing 5 years, not realizing it skips OPT and STEM OPT extension for bachelors.

OPT is an essential work permit for international students, lasting for a year after their graduation. If your degree is in a STEM field you can apply for another year of extension and continue your work till you get a sponsor for an H-1B work visa.

However, what should have been 2 OPT permits for this student will only be one, as he failed to enquire about the details of his combined course. Now, the work privileges related to his bachelor’s degree are lost forever.

While he is considering ideas like retroactively applying for the bachelor’s OPT, separating the degrees under different records, or reinstating the bachelor’s status; there is no guarantee these will work under current immigration rules.

If you are entering an uncertain situation like this, make sure to double-check with your DSO (Designated School Official) or immigration lawyer for clarity.
