A timely intervention by Telangana Health Minister and swift action by doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad helped save the life of Palla Shruti, an intermediate student from Jammikunta town in Karimnagar district, who attempted suicide after failing her exams.
On April 23, distraught over not clearing her intermediate exams, Ms. Shruti consumed a harmful concoction. Her family rushed her to a private hospital in Karimnagar, where she was placed on a ventilator. However, after two days without improvement, doctors there advised that she be shifted to Hyderabad for advanced treatment.
Facing financial constraints and desperation, Ms. Shruti’s parents reached out to Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha through relatives. Responding swiftly, the Minister contacted NIMS Director N. Bheerappa and instructed that emergency medical support be arranged immediately.
Ms. Shruti was admitted to the Emergency ICU at NIMS around midnight on April 25. The following morning, she was transferred to the Acute Medical Care ICU, where doctors began treatment. She remained on a ventilator for seven days before making a gradual recovery. Ms. Shruti was discharged from the hospital on Friday (May 2). The treatment was provided free of cost under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF), hospital authorities said.
