After spending nearly ten years in the United States of America, studying and working at some of the top tech companies, an Indian man opened up about the tough reality of returning home after losing his job in 2024.
In a Reddit post, the tech professional shared that he came back to India in January 2024 after his company laid off around 300 employees, including him. “I moved back to India in January 2024 and was excited to live in India after a decade,” he wrote. “But it’s been a year now, and I still haven’t been able to adjust.”
Since his return, he’s lived in multiple cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, trying to settle down and make sense of life here. But the adjustment hasn’t been easy. He listed eleven things that continue to bother him, calling out what he described as a “broken system.” Among the issues were crumbling roads, dangerous driving, constant pollution, poor infrastructure, and the everyday sight of public urination and littering.

The post resonated with many on social media, sparking a wide range of reactions. Some users were empathetic. A user commented, “I know how you feel brother. I returned in 2023 after living in the US for 15+ years and even left my gc status (personal reasons and FIRE). I have however adjusted and hope you do as well. The things you listed are a daily pain in the behind and I hope they change but until then keep fighting.”
Another user said, “All your complaints are apt. But Indians lack a huge civic sense, they carry the attitude of entitlement. It’s a big drawback but people rarely seem to acknowledge it. Either you try in the Middle East, Europe or try adjusting yourself in any good tier 1 cities.”
A third person said, “I moved to India from Australia, and echo everything you’ve said.”
