Nizamabad: Untimely rains accompanied by hailstorms affected farmers in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts on Sunday. Dried up paddy in villages and paddy purchasing centres was submerged in rain water. Gandhari, Lingampet, Sadashivanagar, Kamareddy mandals in Kamareddy district, Indalwai, Dharpally, Sirikonda mandals in Nizamabad district experienced untimely rains.
The meteorological department has already issued a warning of thunderstorms accompanied with lightening, gusty winds and hailstorms for Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. Gusty winds also uprooted trees and electrical poles in various places. The farmers had already brought paddy to open places and paddy purchasing centres for sale.
Sudden rains made the paddy wet. To protect the crop, a few farmers covered the agricultural produce with tarpaulin sheets. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Venkateshwarlu, a farmer from Sirikonda said rains with hailstorms damaged the dry paddy heaps. Moisture content in the paddy will decrease the sale price of the produce, he lamented. He urged the officials to give helping hand to the farmers.
On the other hand, people heaved a sigh of relief due to the sudden rains. In view of rising temperatures, people are suffering from heat problems for the last few days in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. They are using fans, air coolers and air conditioners round the clock to get relief.
