Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently attended the 4-day Waves Summit 2025, held at Jio Centre, Mumbai, where he praised the upcoming film Ramayana, calling it a world-class production.
He spoke to writer-producer Namit Malhotra and shared that he was truly amazed after visiting the set of the film.

Emphasizing India’s rich history and cultural legacy, Fadnavis said that we are the world’s oldest storytellers. Our art, drama, and music have ancient roots and when we combine them with the latest technology, we can create something extraordinary.
While the government is applauding this mythology-based film, conversations on social media have taken a different turn. Many users are pointing out how most films endorsed by the BJP government have failed at the box office.

From Samrat Prithviraj and Adipurush to Emergency, Sabarmati Report, and even Kesari 2, critics argue that these films often appear to promote the ruling party’s ideological stance.
Their commercial failures, users say, reflect public disinterest in state-sponsored narratives.

Others are questioning why the government is quick to praise religious or mythological films but censors or bans socially relevant ones like Santhosh, which reflect the harsh realities of the nation.
This selective endorsement, they argue, reveals a troubling double standard.
Films that challenge the government or provoke critical thought are often silenced, while those that align with its ideological narratives are celebrated.
While Fadnavis’s point about showcasing our cultural heritage through storytelling is valid, it’s equally important for a society to support cinema that confronts, questions, and stirs its people.
The irony lies in promoting creative freedom and nurturing the artists of tomorrow while only greenlighting films that align with a specific ideology.
In doing so, they are not fostering artists and storytellers, they are breeding fear and encouraging creators to silence the stories they truly want to tell.
