Replacing the chain and sprocket
My chain and sprocket set on 400X was gone in 13.5k kms. Typical signs were excessive slack when pulled out on rear-sprocket with a clear gap between chain and sprocket, and uneven wear where one part of the chain was loose and the other half was very tight. There were audible grinding noises from the chain and lubing did not help either. All classic symptoms of a chain set that was dead. This is the least mileage I have got from a chain sprocket kit on any of my bikes. On asking around on whatsapp groups, I found that many others have had to replace the chain sprocket set at under 12-13k kms. Once rider even got it changed at 8k kms.

Ideal setting for the chain slack
I noticed that the new chain had a slack of 25mm. On further probe, I found that the chain slack recommended for Scrambler 400X is 40-45 mm and for Speed 400 is 20-25mm. Now 20-30mm is the chain slack recommended on most bikes so that is sort of industry default. That could be the reason the service center folks are maintainiing the scrambler 400X slack also at around 25mm. I feel this could be one important factor for the chain sprocket kit dying pre-mature death.
It seems the old Triumph 400 manual did not clearly mention the adjustment details, but then new one captures them clearly. So somewhere, this small but crucial point was overlooked in the manual as well, adding to the confusion.
25mm slack as maintained on the new chain kit from the service center. I have increased the slack now to 40mm by myself. Will ride some and see how it goes. As of now, it feels just fine with 40mm slack.
