A foundation stone was laid for construction of much delayed Rail Over Bridge (ROB) by replacing the existing dilapidated Sankar Vilas ROB in Guntur on Wednesday (May 7, 2025).
Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, along with district In-charge Minister Kandula Durgesh, District Collector S. Nagalakshmi, local MLAs Galla Madhavi , Naseer Ahmad, B. Ramanjaneyulu, Tenali Sravan Kumar, MLC Alapati Rajendra Prasad, Guntur Municipal Corporation Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra, Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu, TDP, JSP, BJP district leaders and others attended the event.
RoB expected to be finished before time
On this occasion, Chandra Sekhar said that the construction of the ROB would be completed even before the expected time and Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu would dedicate it to the nation. He urged people not to believe false propaganda, and assured that the much needed bridge is being constructed with support from all stake holders.
MLA Sravan Kumar suggested to name the proposed ROB after consulting with the residents, instead calling it Sankar Vilas bridge. He added that since Sankar Vilas is a private hotel, it is not appropriate to call the bridge with that name.
The existing bridge is a two-lane road on the railway line between Guntur – Nallapadu section.
Commissioner Srinivasulu said that the entire cost of the proposed bridge is ₹130 crore. The old one was constructed during 1958.
The existing bridge has a length of 430 metres with a deck width of 12 metres. Hence, the bridge is not able to bear the heavy and growing traffic, taking at least one to two hours to cross it during peak hours.
The width of the bridge will be 21.55 metres with four lane with central divider, length of it will be 64 metres, the via duct portion on Amaravati side will be 230 metres, Vegetable Market side will be 253 metres, R.E. wall on Amaravati side will be 215 metres, R.E. wall on Market side will be 168 metres, service road with a width of 5.5 metres, total length of ROB is 930 metres, total length of approach roads is 680 metres.
There are three under passes proposed, each at 4th line of Brodipet, 5th lane in Arundalpet another one in front of Government General Hospital (GGH).
