What do you do when you have developed and engineered an engine that is all modernised and weighs only 54 kilograms? Well, for starters, you make the best of it by plonking onto other motorcycles. And that is exactly what Ducati has done with the newly developed 890 cc V-twin that was introduced last year with the 2024 editions of the Panigale V2 and Streetfighter V2. Not too long after introducing the new motor, the boffins at Bologna decided to equip the Multistrada V2 as well with the detuned version of the same motor to better suit touring with smooth power delivery.

But it doesn’t stop there, the engine VIN series of the new V2 motor is most likely to make its way to power two more motorcycles in Ducati’s portfolio, the Monster and the DesertX. In terms of specifications, the new 890 cc V-twin can produce 120 bhp at 10,750 rpm and 93.3 Nm at 8,250 rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Since this motor has been designed fundamentally for middle-weight sport bike applications, it prioritises street usability along with track agility. The valve system is also the simpler spring-actuated type as opposed to the desmodromic valve system, the latter requiring timely maintenance and additional costs. Lastly, the motor weighs only about 54.4 kilograms, which is the lightest twin-cylinder engine built by Ducati to date.

The Monster and DesertX both are currently powered by the 937 cc Testastretta 90-degree L-twin featuring the desmodromic valve mechanism. While the high-performance motor packs a lot of power it can get a bit heavy on the pocket when it comes to maintenance and the complexity of the motor. But opting for the new V2 mill not only will be help in shaving off some weight but is also easier to manage and maintain.
While the new V2 engine-powered Panigale, Multistrada and Streetfighter are scheduled for launch in India this year, expect Monster V2 and DesertX V2 variants to make their way to our shores only by next year.
