‘Supervisory failure’ blamed for death of 3 workers in Jawahar Nagar

A compensation of ₹15 lakh each has been announced to the kin of the workers who fell to their death in an accident at the power plant in the solid waste management facility in Jawahar Nagar.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation said the solid waste project representatives met Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and the Sanitation department officials, and explained the cause of the accident. The causes have not been explicitly mentioned by the company or by GHMC.

As per reports, the three workers were working on the chimney of the power plant and fell from a scaffolding when the rope by which they were suspended snapped. All the workers were from Uttar Pradesh.

Officials blamed supervisory failure on part of the company for the accident. In adherence with the norms of the Environment Protection Training and Research Institute, the power plant management reportedly engaged the workers to place heat resistant and acid resistant bricks around the furnace and the chimney.

As part of the job, the workers were made to carry a huge stack of bricks too on the scaffolding, under the weight of which the rope snapped and the platform collapsed taking the workers down with it.

The solid waste management facility is being managed by Hyderabad Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Limited (HIMSW), a special purpose vehicle launched by Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited (now rebranded as Re-Sustainability).

The representatives of HIMSW told the Mayor that the families of each victim will be paid as per the norms of the Public Works contract. Of the ₹15 lakh compensation, ₹4 lakh was paid on Friday (May 9), as per information from the GHMC.
