Changed the brake light switch on my 2002 Royal Enfield Electra

For some reason, the brake lights seem not important to mechanics on these old bikes.

Bhpian shield recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Managed to get the brake light switch from an online site based in Calicut. I was surprised as usually parts are from either Chennai or mostly Delhi.

The old brake light switch was working fine actually, but the connecting thin metal rod was missing when I got the bike back from service. I forgot that it was a spring and then this thin metal piece which connects to the brake lever slots. I kept pulling the spring to expand it and slot it into one of the holes and eventually broke the plastic casing of the brake switch inside the tool box.

Sourcing the brake light switch:

I checked at my usual parts store and they didn’t have it neither did the service center. I checked online and found a store with the exact same part. Delivery took 2-3 days. I guess these old Enfields are still quite important in Kerala. I did look for the CDI unit, it looks like that part is hard to get now. The bike is on its third CDI unit now.

Got the part today and fitted it and works fine. For some reason, the brake lights seem not important to mechanics on these old bikes. My old mechanic had removed the front brake wire completely when the bike was just few years old saying it will stick and drain the battery and after a service the rear brake light is never reconnected after removing and refitting the rear wheel.

The carb tuning is more or less perfect now after some fine tuning and running, the engine has become much smoother.

The motorcycle is at 1,31,075 kms and I am planning to do a short ride this weekend to enjoy the post service feel.

The old switch which had broken and the new one post fitment.
