Minor Drivers Receive ‘Placard’ Punishment in Nizamabad

Nizamabad: Two minor boys caught speeding on motorbikes faced unique punishment from Nizamabad police on Sunday. Directed by Commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya, who noticed their reckless driving on Saturday, the police apprehended the minors and obtained their details. On Sunday, the boys were instructed to stand at traffic police booths near the old collectorate crossroads, displaying placards with traffic rules, including slogans like “Wear a helmet for your safety.”

With faces covered, the minors attracted attention from passersby. Typically, traffic violators are assigned social service tasks, but this approach aimed to raise awareness. Police regularly counsel parents against allowing minors to drive.

Commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya’s initiative gained significant traction on social media, with people sharing messages about preventing minors from driving and promoting helmet use. Patrolling police noted they avoid chasing minors to prevent accidents, as high-speed pursuits could lead to fatalities. Instead, they use CCTV footage to trace violators, particularly children, they said.
