Railway police and bomb detection squad personnel check passengers’ luggage and the parcel office during anti-sabotage checks conducted at Vijayawada railway station on Tuesday.

In efforts to strengthen passenger safety, the Government Railway Police (GRP), the Railway Protection Force (RPF), and the City Security Wing (CSW) conducted joint anti-sabotage checks across the railway platforms and the station premises on Tuesday. The operation is being conducted amid heightened security concerns.

The day-long checks, led by GRP inspector J.V. Ramana and RPF inspector Baig, involved Bomb Detection Squads (BDS) checking the platforms.

Mr. Ramana said: “In the wake of the terrorist activities in the State in the last few days, anti-sabotage checks have been carried out for the safety of passengers.”

Multiple teams checked the parcel office, lounges, waiting halls, parking places, ticket-issuing counters, and food stalls on the platforms. Police also verified the tickets and ID cards of some passengers. Sniffer dogs checked the luggage and booked parcels on the platforms.

Mr. Ramana told The Hindu, “Instructions have been given to the beat police to be alert at the entrances and other points. We are monitoring CCTV cameras and footage round-the-clock as a precautionary measure.”

The public has been urged to remain alert and report to the nearest police personnel any suspicious activity, unattended baggage, parcels, or suspicious movement of people in trains or on the platforms.

RPF CI Mr. Baig said: “Foot patrolling and night patrolling have been intensified at railway stations to prevent the entry of anti-social elements and terror suspects. The raids will continue.”
