One Michigan State player is a nominee for college baseball’s highest award. Spartans left-handed pitcher Joseph Dzierwa was been named May 20 as one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given every year to college baseball’s top player. Dzierwa leads the Spartans in wins (eight), innings pitched (85⅔), strikeouts (98) and walk rate (2.2 per nine innings). He also has the lowest ERA (2.31) among qualified Big Ten pitchers and is one of three pitchers in the conference who has registered a complete game shutout this season.

That shutout came against the No. 5 Oregon Ducks on May 2 in one of the Spartans biggest wins of the year, a 2-0 upset of the top team in the Big 10. Michigan State finished 12th in the Big Ten but snuck into the conference tournament as the last seed following a thrilling 11-10 victory over Minnesota in the team’s season finale at home. They will kick off their first game in the conference tournament May 20 against the No. 8 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers. USA Baseball hands the Golden Spikes Award to the top player in college baseball in every season. Recent winners have included Washington Nationals outfielder Dylan Crewes, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutchman and Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper. No Michigan State player has won the award. Fans can vote for their favorite nominee at USA Baseball’s website, with the three finalists announced on June 4.
