The India Meteorological Department has upgraded the weather warning to code Orange in several northern Telangana districts for Thursday evening and extended the yellow warning for several districts till Tuesday morning.
According to IMD’s Hyderabad centre, heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by a thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (50-60 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nizamabad, and Jagtial districts of Telangana on Thursday evening. Whereas, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Nirmal, Rajanna Sirsilla, Sangareddy, Medak, and Kamareddy districts. Most other districts may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
According to an IMD scientist, the rain will continue till mid-next week as Telangana may continue to remain under the influence of a low-pressure system that is already present in coastal Karnataka and Kerala. Hyderabad too is expected to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds that may result in water pooling on roads, inundation of low-lying areas, traffic congestion, electricity outage, and drainage clogging.
Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed parts of Telangana and the state capital, Hyderabad, in the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. More rains are expected on Thursday and Friday.
According to Telangana Planning Development Society, which has over 1000 automated weather stations across the state, Medak Mandal recorded 119.3 mm, the highest in the state as of 6 am on Thursday. This was followed by Masaipet Mandal in Medak with 112.5 mm of rainfall. Over a dozen Mandals recorded between 80 mm and 99 mm of rainfall.
Hyderabad too witnessed heavy rain and thundershowers on Wednesday evening. According to Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the highest rainfall of 98.8 mm was recorded at Bandlaguda near Santosh Nagar, followed by Saidapet, Saroornagar, Amberpet, Uppal, Himayat Nagar, and Charminar, all of which recorded between 64.8 mm and 92.3 mm rainfall.
