Many are pointing out Gill’s below-par performance in SENA countries and using that fact as an argument for him not to be named as the captain.
But the BCCI is also not completely in the wrong here. There is no doubt about Gill’s batting capabilities, and while his current performance in SENA does raise some doubts, the board’s reasoning to give him a couple of chances isn’t completely unjustified.

After all, the BCCI did something similar back in 2007, when they handed over the white ball captaincy to a young talent, also giving him the test captaincy a year later.
And we all know very well how that turned out to be. It gave us a legendary captain we all know and love today in the form of MS Dhoni.

So yes, while there are much better players like KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah in the team, a young and talented player like Gill getting the captaincy early on seems like a favourable gamble.
With everything being speculation as of now, certainty can only be established once the board releases the official details, expected to arrive by tomorrow at best.
