Bhubaneswar: The Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI) kick-started its two-day Sustainable Mining Summit in Bhubaneswar on Monday, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, regulators, and experts to chart a roadmap for sustainable mining practices in India.

Inaugurating the summit, Odisha’s industries and skill development minister Sampad Chandra Swain emphasised the importance of sustainability in the mining sector. “The Government of Odisha has undertaken several progressive initiatives, including continuous auction of mineral blocks and the adoption of technology for mineral dispatch and supply chain management,” the minister said.

The summit holds particular significance as India works towards achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2070. The platform saw vibrant discussions on decarbonising the mining sector and integrating sustainability into its core operations.

Delivering the welcome address, Prabodh Mohanty, member of FIMI’s Managing Committee, set the tone for the summit, while Arun Misra, Chairman of the Governing Council, FIMI-SMI and CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, stressed the vital role of mining in powering India’s industrial growth. “Mining is the foundation for the creation and success of all industries in India,” he noted.

Pankaj Satija, chairman of the Skill Council for Mining Sector, delivered the vote of thanks and highlighted the industry’s progress on sustainability parameters. “While many mining companies have advanced with initiatives like star ratings for sustainable practices, the bar continues to rise. The focus now shifts towards net-zero mining through battery- or hydrogen-powered equipment and renewable energy-run plants,” Satija added.

A key highlight of the summit was the release of FIMI’s study report titled ‘Adoption of Cleaner Vehicles for the Indian Mining Industry’. The report offers actionable insights into the use of electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel, biofuels, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) in mining operations, along with a phased strategy to enable wider adoption and ensure long-term environmental and operational sustainability.

The summit drew participation from over 200 delegates, reflecting the growing consensus and commitment towards responsible mining practices in the country.
