Tata Motors seems to give a major powertrain upgrade to its flagship 7-seater SUV – the Safari. The latest spy images have ignited speculations that the new 2025 Tata Safari could soon arrive with a long-awaited petrol engine option – something that’s missing in the current lineup. However, that’s not all. There is also a buzz around a more powerful diesel engine variant as Tata recently acquired the rights to develop and modify Stellantis’ FAM B 2.0L diesel engine, which currently powers both the Safari and the Harrier SUVs.
2025 Tata Safari Diesel:

The existing 2.0L diesel engine of the Safari produces a maximum power of 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. With the acquired rights of this engine, the home-grown carmaker will be able to recalibrate the motor independently. Rumour has it that the updated Fiat 2.0L diesel engine will deliver power around 180bhp, making the Safari and Harrier more powerful.

2025 Tata Safari Petrol:
The Tata Safari petrol will feature the brand’s new 1.5L turbocharged, direct injection (TGDi) engine. This motor not only meets BS6 Phase II emission standards, but also capable of running on petrol and E20 ethanol petrol mix. Tata’s new 1.5L TGDi engine pushes out a maximum power of 170PS at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm. The new petrol engine is boosted with the high-pressure direct injection technology and an advanced combustion system. It could be offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes.
Price Expectations:
The more powerful Tata Safari diesel is likely to witness a minor price hike, considering the additional research and development costs involved in the tuning and enhancement as well as the major changes in manufacturing procedure.
The Tata Safari petrol will certainly be more affordable than its diesel counterparts. Its prices are expected to start around Rs 14 lakh onwards. Currently, this premium 7-seater SUV is available in the price range of Rs 15.50 lakh – Rs 27.25 lakh (all, ex-showroom).
