Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand
A day after 11 stampede deaths in Bengaluru during the celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory in the IPL final, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand took to social media to post a “what if” scenario.
The trigger was the frenzied celebrations late into the night across parts of Hyderabad as soon as the RCB won the match. Large crowds gathered on the NTR Marg stretch, Tank Bund, and Necklace Road, prompting a swift police response after the situation turned chaotic.
“What if there were some deaths in Hyderabad too? Can anyone expect celebrations for RCB in Hyderabad city?” wrote Mr. Anand on X (formerly Twitter).
“The night patrol officers were caught completely off guard around midnight as hordes of youngsters and revellers descended on the area. Traffic came to a standstill in multiple directions and instances of hooliganism were reported. Police rushed additional forces and carried out a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd,” shared Mr Anand. “
He articulated how impromptu celebrations triggered and choreographed by social media for the unlikeliest causes could be dangerous. “This is not a national team winning the World Cup ! It’s a mere franchise called RCB which works on commercial lines and does not have a single Hyderabad player in it !? It’s not even a #Hyderabad based team,” wrote Mr. Anand.
“But with the social media playing a huge role across the country and the globe, perhaps police has to be alert for everyone and everything in future! Is it humanely possible to do so,” he concluded his post on X.
