BHPian ShivC recently shared this with other enthusiasts:1500 km Review – Old Man EMU Suspension for the JimnyIt’s now more than 1500 Kms and about 2 months since the Oldman EMU 40mm suspension installation on our Jimny. Time to share our short long-term review. The suspension, when it was installed, seemed to be slightly out of tandem with the front and the rear. The rear was also slightly hard. All this settled down in about 500 kilometers and now both move in tandem and you can feel the suspension performing over hard surfaces, bumps, ruts and also undulations on the road. The LiftThe suspension has now settled down to slightly more than 40 mm lift both in the front and the rear. This is critical as ground clearance is the single most important attribute when it comes to how well the Jimny performs off-road. The Lift – Side Profile : LearningsOur learning from suspension while experiencing 2 other suspensions and Old Man EMU on the same Jimny: Suspension is a make-or-break factor in how well your Jimny works everywhere. And in this, Old Man EMU shines – and way way brighter than the others. While we used to think that suspension works harder off-road than on road, it’s more likely the reverse. The suspension works hard after all, not just at the undulations and the bumps it has to cater to, and this becomes extra hard work for the suspension when all this happens at speed, on the road.Off-Road DrivingAt crawling speed no matter how big the bumps and inclines the suspension does not work that hard even at full articulation. In conditions like these the dampers have less work to do. Something to keep in mind while riding on any suspension and Old Man EMU is no different. It is at speeds of 30-50 with broken roads that the Old Man EMU shines. It only gets better with higher speeds. Its damping is something worth experiencing. All this combined with the stability and vastly decreased body roll provided by the panhrad relocation bracket takes this suspension one level higher than the other suspensions in performance. Off Road: On-road drivingAt speeds combined with undulations and bumps is where the suspension really has to start working hard. Old Man EMU has again got the damper tuning right, along with the combination of coil spring rates. Old Man EMU shines as this has the lowest spring rates (compared to the competition), very near the OEM and slightly lower in fact, translating to a posh, comfortable ride. High-speed cornering is also very confidence-inspiring. Typical Interior Roads and the Jimny: 4 words to summarise our impressions of the Old Man EMU: “IT’S THE GOLD STANDARD”. Nothing in other available suspension options comes even close. A Random Shot: Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.
