Locomotive No 37364 (WAP-7) of Electric Loco Shed, Lallaguda, South Central Railway, won the first prize in a ‘Beauty contest for Electric Locos’ held in Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, last month. It will be sharing the top prize with Royapuram Electric Loco Shed, Southern Railway, from among the 13 locomotives from various zonal railways which participated in the competition.

The locomotives are judged based on their unique features or modifications, overall aesthetic appeal, and maintenance standards. Major highlights of the upgraded CAB – Loco No 37364 (WAP-7) included modifying the AC duct in the cab and by providing thermal insulation around the cab body and machine room.

This helped bringing the temperatures down by 20 °C at crew seat, 33°C at roof, 13 °C at floor and 22 °C at driver desk under peak operating conditions.

By providing acoustic insulation around the cab body and machine room, the noise level in the cab was reduced by 2db in the machine room, 18 db in the cab under peak operating conditions.

An AI-based driver monitoring system (DMS) has been provided in the cab to monitor alertness of crew on a real time basis. A 360° loco view system with 14 cameras per loco facilitates crew to monitor pantograph condition, machine room condition, cabin surveillance and the track view on monitors available in the cab, said an official release

Meanwhile, the SCR has recorded 12.832 million tonnes (MTs) in freight loading in May 2025 which is highest ever for the month in any year. The previous best was 12.418 MTs. Freight loading registered up to last month in the current financial year is 25.194 MTs, also the highest ever freight loading for the corresponding period in any financial year, the release added.
