Big plans sometimes hit big speed bumps, and this is what exactly what happened with Tata’s much-anticipated Avinya electric SUV. The model was first showcased in its concept form at the 2022 Auto Expo. It’s production-ready version was originally planned to launch by 2026. However, the timeline has now been pushed to 2027. Speaking to an online media publication, Vivek Srivatsa, CCO at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, has revealed that the Tata Avinya brand will be introduced in 2027.

Why the delay?
The main reason is Tata’s partnership with Jaguar Land Rover. The two had signed an MoU to use JLR’s EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) platform for its Avinya range of vehicles. This is the second collaboration between these two brands, both previously partnered on JLR’s D8 platform for the Harrier and Safari SUVs.
JRL’s Tamil Nadu facility is running behind schedule, causing a launch delay. JLR had talked with local suppliers for sourcing the EV components last year, but the plan was suspended due to higher pricing.
Earlier, Tata said it would localize the EMA platform to reduce the manufacturing cost and JRL’s negotiation with its suppliers were expected to help in getting high-tech components at a competitive price. With the EMA architecture, the carmaker had planned to position the Avinya brand as a premium offering.
What’s Plan B?
Now, Tata Motors is exploring for Plan B, which is expected to be a low-cost version of EMA platform or a completely new architecture sourced from outside the Tata Group. The Tata Avinya will be the brand’s first model to be designed on the Gen 3 skateboard born-electric platform.
Tata avinya range:
The home-grown automaker will bring in five electric models under the Avinya brand, which are internally known as P1, P2, P3, P4 and P5. The P1 will be the first production-ready model to hit roads and will be manufactured at Tata’s Sanand-based plant. It will be an electric SUV, estimated to be priced above Rs 35 lakh.
