Once upon a time, they were legendary directors who were known for delivering back-to-back blockbusters. But now, they have been reduced to disappointing filmmakers who are consistently delivering mediocre projects. We are talking about iconic Tamil directors Shankar, Mani Ratnam and AR Murugadoss. All three were considered top-tier filmmakers in Indian cinema at one point. Cut to present, they are unable to make appealing films anymore and are ruining their legacy in one way. All three directors delivered four biggest disasters in Indian cinema in the last one year.
Mani Ratnam, who is known for his poetic and deep films like Mouna Ragam, Nayakudu, Roja, Bombay, Iddaru, Dil Se and Sakhi, has now been making below-par films like Cheliya, Nawab, Ponniyin Selvan series and Thug Life. His recent film Thug Life is being called his weakest work and may end up as a big disaster. Released amid huge expectations, this Kamal Haasan-starrer became a big flop at the box office.
The same is the case with Shankar. He is a visionary filmmaker who kick-started the tradition of making high-budget magnum opus films. In his career, Shankar made many landmark films like Gentleman, Premikudu, Bharateeyudu, Aparichuthudu, Oke Okkadu, Shivaji and Robot. But of late, he has been delivering upsetting films like I, 2.0, Bharateeyudu 2 and Game Changer. Bharateeyudu 2 and Game Changer were the biggest disasters in Shankar’s career and also made people lose their belief in him.
Then, there is AR Murugadoss, who is known for making commercial films with a strong social message. From the likes of Ghajini, Thuppakki and Kaththi, he has downgraded himself by making films like Darbar and Sikandar. His last film, Sikandar, with Salman Khan, was a mediocre outing which has no substance at all. Even his hardcore fans couldn’t digest the fact that it was made by him.
Many people opined that it is highly unlikely that these iconic filmmakers can make a strong comeback. On the other side, their die-hard fans still believe in them and are hoping that they would silence this negativity by making a strong comeback with their respective upcoming projects.
