Gender gap in tech access: Telangana women lag behind in smartphone usage | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Despite notable progress by women across various sectors, a persistent gender gap remains—particularly in the digital and tech domains. The latest 2025 Annual Modular Telecom Survey, released by the Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation, highlights this disparity in mobile phone ownership and usage in Telangana.According to the survey, 77% of men aged 15 and above use smartphones, compared to 68% of women in the same age group. Additionally, 14% of men still use non-smartphones, while a higher 21% of women rely on these basic devices. Interestingly, 8% of men and 9% of women use both smartphones and non-smartphones, reflecting varying levels of digital access and adaptability.Overall, 73% of Telangana’s residents use smartphones, signaling a strong shift toward modern mobile technology. However, 18% still depend on non-smartphones, and 9% use both types. These figures underscore the continuing gender-based digital divide and point to both the challenges and opportunities in promoting inclusive digital access across the state.
