Suryapet: In a surprise move, several beneficiaries of the double-bedroom housing scheme were taken into custody by Suryapet town police on Monday, ahead of Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka’s scheduled visit to the district.
The arrests have triggered controversy, with locals and activists questioning the timing and motive behind the police action. Police sources said the beneficiaries were detained as a preemptive measure to prevent possible protests or disruptions during the Deputy CM’s visit.
Those taken into custody were identified as members of the 2BHK housing scheme committee, including SK Asha, Katuri Bikshavamma, Ramini Pavani, Shake Nayim, Rachakonda Upender, Endi Rafi, Ravi, Anil, Sandeep, and Naresh.
The double-bedroom housing scheme, a flagship initiative of the previous BRS government, was designed to provide free housing to the underprivileged. However, delays in allocation and unresolved grievances have caused mounting frustration among beneficiaries, prompting some to organise protests to highlight their concerns.
