Monsoon emergency works transferred to HYDRAA

The State government has issued orders on Monday transferring the responsibilities of monsoon emergency works, disaster management and urban flooding from the GHMC to the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency.

The decision has been taken in view of recent complaints of irregularities against the tenders awarded by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, sources informed.

As per the orders, HYDRAA will take up works such as de-clogging of catch-pits, dewatering operations in case of flooding, post monsoon desilting, clearance of silt from roads, nala safety audit, traffic diversions, removal of obstruction to stormwater flow, removal of fallen trees and branches, and coordination with various departments concerned.

HYDRAA chief A.V. Ranganath, upon enquiry, informed that tender process will be completed in a week’s time for the monsoon emergency works. He said the pre-monsoon works will remain with GHMC.

Meanwhile, HYDRAA, through a press release, informed that majority of the complaints received at the public grievance platform Prajavani on Monday pertained to encroachment of stormwater drains.

Residents from Dargah area in Ameenpur complained of repeated flooding due to encroachment of natural flow of stormwater and redirection of stormwater flows from other colonies to here.

Complaints were also made about shrinkage of Langar Houz lake owing to encroachment by a public representative who broke the fence and got a road laid through the lake, besides using the lake bed as parking yard, a note from HYDRAA said.
