Suryapet: In a major crackdown against sellers of spurious seeds, the Suryapet police seized 22 quintals of counterfeit cotton seeds valued approximately at Rs 65 lakh on Tuesday. The operation helped prevent a large quantity of substandard seeds reaching unsuspecting farmers.
In a joint operation, police teams from Mothe and Atmakur (S) police stations and the Central Crime Station conducted raids at multiple locations across the district. The operation led to the arrest of six individuals involved in the illegal seed supply racket. Four of the accused were apprehended in connection with a case registered at Atmakur (S) police station, while two others were arrested in a case under Mothe police station.
During a media conference held at Suryapet District Police Office, Superintendent of Police K Narasimha said that the accused had been deceiving farmers by falsely claiming the seeds were resistant to herbicides and capable of delivering high yields. He clarified that no such herbicide-resistant seeds were officially produced and urged the farmers not to trust such claims.
He advised farmers to purchase seed only from authorised dealers and government-recognised sources.
