One wrong move is all it takes to change an entire chess game. This is exactly what happened at the Norway Chess 2025 during a crucial match between Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen and Indian prodigy D. Gukesh. The moment that has gone widely viral captures Carlsen’s frustrated reaction after he lost to Gukesh.
Carlsen, who was visibly upset over the loss, ended up slamming the table before regaining composure and shaking hands with Gukesh. While his reaction has now prompted a series of remarks on the internet, including criticism from many, it has also sparked a flood of memes, sending social media into a frenzy. In a recent interview, Gukesh opened up about the memes circulating on the internet, also mentioning the one he liked the most.
“The memes are actually very funny,” he said, further talking about a cat meme where the animal instantly jumps on the table as soon as Carlsen slams it hard. “I laughed at it for like 10 minutes,” he added.
During a conversation with ChessBase India, the 19-year-old was seen laughing over a few other funny memes curated after the particular incident. Fans were quick to take to the comment section as they shared their reactions to the meme trend. One wrote, “OMG, I’m so glad we memed chess,” while another added, “My whole feed is blessed with this meme.”
“Magnus-Lost, he gave the new Insta trend. Gukesh lost, he gave the Magnus Norway Memories,” a comment read.
Prior to this, Gukesh opened up on Carlsen’s table slam moment and told Take Take Take, “It’s not only about the moves; some people get attracted to the emotions, and all the memes and stuff really help. I’m glad I could contribute.”
