Five young devotees from Hyderabad drowned in the Godavari River while taking a holy dip at Basar on Sunday. The victims, aged 17 to 24, were part of a pilgrimage group and were unfamiliar with swimming in the river’s deeper sections.

Nirmal: Five devotees from Hyderabad drowned in Godavari while taking a holy dip in it at temple town Basar on Sunday. Bodies of the devotees were retrieved from the river.
Police said that the devotees were identified as Rakesh (17), Vinod (18), Madan (18), Ruthvik and Bharath (24) from Chintalbazar in Dilsukhnagar of Hyderabad.
A group of 18 persons belonging to three families had arrived in Basar to visit the ancient Sri Gnana Saraswathi Devasthanam on the weekend. The five met a watery grave when they were taking the dip at a deep point of the river. The youngsters who were not familiar with swimming ventured into the spot and drowned.
Upon receiving information from the family members of the youngsters, police rushed to the spot and deployed expert divers and brought out the bodies.
