Hyderabad Bird Atlas Season 2 survey to kick off on July 5

Sangareddy: The much-awaited second season of the Hyderabad Bird Atlas (HBA) survey will begin on July 5 across the State capital and continue till July 20. The fortnight-long initiative aims to document the presence and abundance of various bird species in 180 randomly selected regions across Hyderabad.

In the first season held in February 2025, over 200 bird watchers participated voluntarily and recorded the presence of 195 different bird species within the Outer Ring Road limits. This year’s survey will expand to cover new areas of the city as part of the ongoing effort to track bird diversity in the face of rapid urbanisation.

Speaking to ‘Telangana Today’, Sriram Reddy, a core member of the HBA team, said it was vital to document avian life in Hyderabad, especially at a time when the city and its surroundings were experiencing swift urban growth. He described the preparation of the Hyderabad Bird Atlas as the first step towards understanding bird distribution and guiding conservation efforts.

During the first phase, volunteers covered 180 locations and identified 70,189 individual birds representing 195 species. Of these, 83 were migratory species and four were classified as threatened.

Sriram appealed to nature enthusiasts to participate in large numbers to make the upcoming survey a success. He added that the HBA team planned to conduct similar surveys in the future to develop a more comprehensive bird atlas for Hyderabad. Once completed, the city will be among the very few in the world to have such a detailed avian record.
