Want To Rent A Self-Drive Car in Malaysia; What Are My Options?

Want To Rent A Self-Drive Car in Malaysia; What Are My Options? BHPian Nishith recently shared this with other enthusiasts: I’m planning an upcoming trip to Malaysia with family (along with my 2.5 year toddler) and looking to rent a self-drive car for better flexibility and convenience, especially while exploring local attractions and doing short drives. Our plan is as follows:6 days in mainland Malaysia, staying at an Airbnb (primarily around Kuala Lumpur and nearby areas), have picked a one with parking.3 days in Langkawi, staying at a resortWhich self-drive rental companies did you use?How was the booking process and the pickup/drop-off experience? Are there any license requirements or documentation? (I have an Indian driving license – is that sufficient?)Car quality and reliability?Any hidden charges or things to be aware of?Would you recommend self-driving over Grab/public transport for families?Driving in Langkawi – ease of navigation, fuel stations, parking, etc.Any dos and don’ts from your experience? We’re looking for budget-friendly, reliable options that are family-safe and easy to use. Thanks in advance for your inputs! Looking forward to hearing your experiences. Thanks, Nishith Here’s what BHPian SGKadded to the discussion:In Langkawi, there are quite a lot of options available as soon as you come out of the airport, and they pretty much have all models of cars. I took a self-drive car, and it is very much required for you to go around in Langkawi. Just follow usual checks and take videos, like what we do in India. Traffic was very light, and everyone followed the traffic rules. Generally, they are very friendly, and I had a good experience with locals and the car rental company. There were no hidden charges. You can just use Google Maps for navigation in Langkawi. Please note all the above is based on my experience from 2018. In KL, I think you should be more comfortable with public transport/Grab. A self-drive car could be a pain with parking in tourist places or when eating out. I have not used a self-drive car in KL.Check outBHPian commentsfor more insights and information.
