During a citywide crackdown to ensure the safety of schoolchildren, Hyderabad Traffic Police on Tuesday caught five school bus drivers driving under the influence of alcohol across West and North Zones.
The checks were carried out at 34 locations covering key areas including Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Panjagutta, Begumpet, SR Nagar, Marredpally, Bowenpally, Trimulgherry, Mahankali and Gopalapuram. A total of 324 school buses were inspected during the operation.
The drivers caught drunk were from Sri Chaithanya School, Sr Nagar (Bus), Bolton School, Mahankali (Bus), Geethanjali School, Mahankali (Autorickshaw), Prism Montessori School, Banjara Hills (Autorickshaw).
“The five errant drivers, caught ferrying children while intoxicated, have been booked. Such behaviour poses a direct threat to the lives of schoolchildren and would not be tolerated under any circumstance,” said the DCP (Traffic-I) Rahul Hegde.
During the drive, the DCP reminded school authorities of the binding Supreme Court guidelines issued in W.P. (Civil) 1309 of 1985 regarding school transport. These include the requirement of valid passenger permits, visible signage stating ‘On School Duty’, strict adherence to seating limits, availability of first-aid kits and drinking water, experienced drivers with clean traffic records, and mandatory attendants on board to assist children.
School managements have been told to strictly comply with these rules and ensure that safety protocols are being followed by all drivers under their watch. The police urged that any vehicle used to transport children must notify local law enforcement with details of the vehicle and driver.
The police have appealed to all educational institutions and parents to stay vigilant and report any violations that could endanger children’s safety.
