The Kansas City Chiefs are getting put through their paces at minicamp with rookies and players on the roster bubble needing to make a good impression on the coaching staff.

But that can be hard when you can’t be full-go like left tackle Josh Simmons.

After a patellar tendon injury ended his 2024 season early, Josh has been on the comeback trail and now he is slowly beginning to get involved in team activities.

And while it is only a small sample size, Patrick Mahomes already likes what he sees from the rookie tackle.

“Josh is doing a great job,” Mahomes said. “He’s getting healthier and healthier every single day, and he’s doing a great job of learning. He’s getting the ultimate test going against Spags [Steve Spagunolo, defensive coordinator] and seeing the blitzes he’s going to see. He’ll continue to get more reps, but he’s done a great job with the whole process and I’m excited for him to get healthier going into training camp.”

Training camp does loom as a loose deadline if you will to see how far along Simmons is in his recovery, but he has hit the ground running in the classroom.

But as we know, training camp is where you put all of what you’ve learned at OTAs and minicamp into practice.

With Jaylon Moore seen right now at least, as the starter to protect Mahomes’ blindside, the hope is that eventually, Simmons will overtake him. When that happens is anyone’s guess, but Josh is taking it day by day as he eyes training camp as when he’ll be ready to be full-go.

Until then, he’ll continue to impress with Mahomes seemingly happy with his rookie tackle’s progress.
