Bollywood’s popular ‘simple small-town boy,’ Rajkummar Rao, has built his reputation playing relatable characters from humble backgrounds. However, the roles he’s being offered lately don’t seem very “small” anymore.
Maddock Films is producing a biopic on public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, but there are two major updates worth noting.

Instead of making a full-fledged biopic, the upcoming project will focus specifically on Nikam’s pivotal role in the high-profile trial following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, rather than chronicling his entire life or career.
The second big update is that, according to recent reports, Rajkummar Rao has been roped in to play Ujjwal Nikam, who spearheaded the prosecution against Ajmal Kasab, the sole surviving terrorist from the 26/11 attacks.

Initially, Aamir Khan was approached for the role. However, due to his commitment to Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir stepped away from the project, making way for Rajkummar Rao.
The yet-to-be-titled film is being directed by Avinash Arun Dhaware, acclaimed for helming both seasons of the Prime Video series Paatal Lok as well as films like Killa and Three of Us. The screenplay has been penned by Sumit Roy.

Though inspired by true events and a real-life figure, the film is said to avoid the conventional biopic format. Instead, it will focus on one of the most significant legal battles in India’s recent history.
The film aims to highlight the intense courtroom drama and behind-the-scenes struggles involved in delivering justice after the 26/11 attacks.
Fans are excited to see Rajkummar Rao in a role that’s a stark departure from his usual small-town persona. With his upcoming film Maalik scheduled to release next month, they’re hopeful this shift will be a refreshing one.
