If you’re in need of a versatile bench bat, look no further than former New York Yankees infielder Pablo Reyes.
Reyes, who turns 32 in September, officially elected free agency on Thursday. The Yankees designated the veteran utilityman earlier this week when Giancarlo Stanton returned from the injured list.
Although Reyes could theoretically re-sign with the Yankees on a minor-league deal, it’s far likelier that he will join another organization in the coming weeks.
Reyes made the Yankees out of spring training and hit .194 with a double, two RBI, and a .468 OPS in 34 plate appearances. The Yankees took full advantage of Reyes’ versatility, playing him at four positions during his time on the roster; he even pitched an inning during a May 31 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
If Reyes ever thinks about becoming a full-time pitcher, he likely shouldn’t use his five-hit, three-run inning against the Dodgers as proof of his potential.
Reyes is a lifetime .245 hitter with eight homers, a .648 OPS, and -0.8 bWAR over 257 games for five teams. We’ll see if any previous employers, such as the Boston Red Sox or New York Mets, bring Reyes back as a bench option.
Oswald Peraza remains the Yankees’ primary backup infielder, though DJ LeMahieu has extensive experience at most infield spots. However, LeMahieu has only played second base since coming off the IL last month.
