Dr Saiprasad Sahoo, senior consultant in nephrology at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar, shared his views that many misconceptions hinder individuals from making changes to their lifestyle concerning their kidneys.

According to Dr Maria Bethsaida Manual, consultant, nephrology, and transplant physician, at Manipal Hospital Whitefield, several myths about kidney disease lead to confusion and result in a delay in treatment. Dr Sahoo and Dr Manual revealed some common myths that they hope people should stop believing concerning their kidneys.

Myth 1: Kidney Disease is Only A Risk for Older People.

Many people believe that kidney disease is only an issue for older adults. Issues with your kidneys can occur at any age, especially in individuals with diabetes, hypertension and a family history of kidney disease, if not taken proper care. Their kidneys can be affected at a relatively young age, Dr Sahoo said.

Myth 2: Drinking More liquid can Prevent Kidney Disease.

Dr Manual said, Staying hydrated is beneficial for the kidneys, whereas in advanced stages of kidney diseases (e.g., End-Stage Renal Disease or Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease), excess fluid consumption can be dangerous.

Myth 5: Painkillers Are Safe for Your Kidneys

Dr Sahoo also suggested that ” many people believe that painkillers don’t cause any damage to the body, but consuming NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, too often can result in harming your kidneys, especially for those who are at risk.

Myth 6: Dialysis Is Inevitable for patients suffering from Kidney Disease

It is a misconception that dialysis is only an alternative once you have kidney disease. Dr Manual explains, ” not all the patients progress to the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). In some patients, the right medication and changes in their lifestyle can also help them remain stable for years.

Myth 7: Kidney Disease Cannot Be Prevented

People often think that there is no way to prevent kidney diseases. Dr Manual answered that not all types of kidney diseases can indeed be prevented. One can adopt a healthy lifestyle, manage their blood pressure and blood sugar, perform exercises and remain active can help slow down the progression of kidney disease and reduce the risk of kidney failure.
