Maruti’s Upcoming Compact SUV To Get Strong Hybrid Tech?

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch a new compact SUV just before this year’s festive season. While its official launch date, name and specifications are yet to be revealed, it’s expected to be called ‘Maruti Escudo’. The SUV will be based on the Grand Vitara, sharing its platform, features and design elements. However, the Escudo will be exclusively sold through the Arena dealership network, indicating more affordable pricing.

Price Target:

Maruti’s upcoming compact SUV is expected to cost from Rs 9.70-10 lakh onwards. In the company’s product lineup, the Escudo will sit above the Brezza and below the Grand Vitara. This means, its base variant will be more expensive than the Brezza and more affordable than the Grand Vitara. Its pricing is likely to overlap with select variants of both siblings.

Why it can skip strong hybrid?

In terms of pricing strateg, the Maruti Escudo is likely to be offered with the 1.5L K15C naturally aspirated petrol engine, boosted with the mild hybrid technology. This powertrain will offer a right balance between the pricing and performance. The strong hybrid powertrain is expected to be skipped for Maruti’s upcoming compact SUV, as it’s significantly more expensive and would push its pricing beyond the reach of target audience.

Furthermore, while the Escudo will underpin the Global C-platform, it will feature a longer wheelbase. The strong hybrid systems require additional space for battery, cooling infrastructure and e-CVT packaging, all of which will certainly increase manufacturing costs for the Arean-only model.

Interior & Features:

The cabin of the new Maruti compact SUV is expected to resemble that of the Grand Vitara. However, it might come with a slightly revised dashboard with soft-touch materials and new upholstery and trims. Key features are likely to include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a panoramic sunroof, connected car tech, ventilated seats, HUD, multiple airbags and more. However, the Maruti Escudo might skip some premium features such as ADAS, which are currently available on the Grand Vitara.
