Superstar Rajinikanth is all set to return to the big screen with Coolie, one of the most anticipated pan-India releases of 2025.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the high-octane action entertainer is scheduled for a grand theatrical release on August 14, across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages.

However, the Hindi version of the film has unexpectedly stirred controversy — not for its content, but for its new title: Majadoor. The name swap has triggered a wave of severe backlash online, who are calling it “the most trolled Indian film title ever.”

Social media has been flooded with memes mocking Majadoor for its “B-grade vibe” and lack of punch. Many fans feel the title sounds outdated, uninspired, and far removed from the mass appeal associated with Coolie.

Industry sources suggest the change might have been due to copyright restrictions. Since Coolie (1983), starring Amitabh Bachchan, is still considered a legendary Hindi film, the rights to the title may not have been available for reuse.

Still, fans remain unconvinced. They argue that the filmmakers should have gone the extra mile to retain Coolie in some form. Suggested alternatives circulating online include:

Given that Coolie will clash at the box office with YRF’s War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani, every element — including the title — could influence audience turnout. In such a competitive landscape, fans feel Majadoor weakens the film’s positioning in the Hindi belts.

Whether the makers will reconsider or stick with Majadoor remains to be seen. There’s still some time for them to make a course correction.

But one thing is clear — in the world of big-budget mass entertainers, the title is more than just a name. It’s the film’s first impression, and for many, this one feels like a huge, missed opportunity.
